Articles from the

September 2005 issue of CQ posted on our

website include:

The September issue of CQ is highlighted by the CW results of the 2004 CQ World Wide DX Contest, which despite dwindling sunspot numbers, recorded the greatest number of logs ever submitted for any ham radio contest, as well as 31 new records. As the saying goes, "The CQWW makes its own propagation."

Next, following up on the June article, "Geopolitics and Amateur Radio," Ed Richmond, W4YO, goes "Sleuthing the Neutral Zones" to find out who really made the first DXpedition to the former Neutral Zones between Saudi Arabia and Iraq, and Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. In addition, Gary Geissinger, WA0SPM, shows us how to calibrate an HF transceiver without instruments, using commonly available frequency standards.

We've got reader feedback on CQ's new "Waking Up DXing" program, specifically concerning the new CQ DX Field Award, the CQ DX Marathon, and the CQ iDX Award.

In "Growing Up a Ham," Tamara Wilhite, KB5RYE, gives us her perspective on growing up in a ham radio household and passing the tradition on to the next generation.

In this month's final feature story, we bring you the rules for the CQ 2005 World Wide DX Contest - the SSB Weekend is October 29th and 30th and the CW weekend is November 26th and 27th.

Columnist Irwin Math, WA2NDM revisits the micro oscillator in his "Math's Notes" technical column. "What's New" editor Karl Thurber, W8FX, reports on the latest batch of amateur radio goodies, and Public Service Editor Bob Josuweit, WA3PZO, discusses ham radio's international response to emergencies across the globe.

In "How it Works" and "World of Ideas," columnist Dave Ingram, K4TWJ, provides a two-part primer on different receiver circuits used to reduce or eliminate noise from radio signals.  Columnist Fred Maia, W5YI, reports on the $21,000 fine the FCC has levied against controversial ham Glenn Baxter, K1MAN, in this month's edition of "Washington Readout," and Beginner's Editor Wayne Yoshida, KH6WZ, examines the "next step" for new hams - moving on up to a General or Extra Class license.

We remember VHF pioneer Harold "Tommy" Thomas, W2UK, in the latest installment of "VHF Plus" by columnist Joe Lynch, N6CL. In his "DX" column, Carl Smith, N4AA, previews the K7C DXpedition to Kure Atoll, and this month's installment of John Dorr, K1AR's "Contesting" column features the 2005 CQ Contest Survey.

In "Awards," columnist Ted Melinosky, K1BV, focuses on awards from the Wireless Institute of Australia. Tomas Hood, NW7US, discusses our quiet -but by no means dead - Sun, and predicts surprises in his "Propagation" column."

That's a look at the highlights of the September, 2005 issue of CQ, which should be on newsstands and in readers' mailboxes by late August. For information on becoming a CQ subscriber, click the "Subscribe Here" button on our home page. (Issue highlights by Dan Moseson)
