If you love rock 'n roll, then believe it or not, you're going to love the November issue of CQ! We start out with an exclusive CQ interview with rock music legend Joe Walsh of the Eagles, and formerly of the James Gang. He's also a longtime ham and collector of vintage tube radios. Next, we feature a suite of software designed specially for DXers. It includes programs for rig control, logging, propagation and beam headings, digital communications and more. Each part of the DXLab Suite is separate, so you only need to get what you're going to use, but they all work together and, best of all, they're free! We've also got the rules for next winter's CQ World Wide 160-Meter Contest, and a couple of antenna articles -- the W1ZY 4-3-2 Array, a four-wire, three-element, 2-direction wire beam; and K4VWK's look at Portable Antennas for 75 and 80 Meters. Bob Shrader, W6BNB, returns with the conclusion of his two-part article called "Electricity is Everywhere," in which we learn that an electric current is not actually a flow of electrons themselves, but a flow of energy between electrons in a conductor. Plus, we have two equipment reviews -- the Kenwood TH-F6 tri-band handheld with a receiver that practically covers DC to light, and the Elecraft K2/100, a higher power version of the very popular K2 QRP (low power) radio. Among our columns, "Math's Notes" Editor WA2NDM takes an important look at laser safety; Public Service Editor WA3PZO profiles the three finalists for this year's Newsline Young Ham of the Year award -- all of whom are involved in some form of public service through ham radio; and How it Works Editor K4TWJ offers some "Straight Talk on Reduced-Size Antennas." Speaking of antennas, Beginners' Editor WB2D covers the basics of pre-winter antenna maintenance and repair. "Washington Readout" Editor W5YI continues his series on what every ham needs to know, concentrating this month on your responsibilities as a licensee. And K4TWJ, wearing his "World of Ideas" hat, finishes up a two-part series on HF-Packing. Radio Classics Editor N4QB follows up September's feature article on New York's Radio Row with a behind the scenes visit to one of those stores -- Gross Radio. DX Editor N4AA brings us a smorgasbord of DXing news from all over the world, and Awards Editor K1BV introduces us to Sharon Martarello, KJ8F, who just finished up her USA-CA All Counties Award for getting confirmed contacts with every one of the 3076 counties in the United States. This month's column also introduces several awards specifically for contacts made using the PSK-31 digital mode. N6CL's VHF-Plus column lights up the sky with this November's Leonids meteor shower, which is widely expected to be a meteor storm, perhaps better than last year's. Contesting Editor K1AR brings us the results of his annual Contest Survey, and Propagation Editor NW7US checks out predictions for the CQ World Wide CW DX Contest on November 23 and 24, plus last-minute updates for the CQWW Single Sideband weekend October 26 and 27. Click here for CQWW rules and paper log forms, although we very strongly encourage you to submit your log electronically. |
