The May issue of CQ is a Mobile Special and we’ve got plenty of articles to get you on the air from just about anywhere. Mobile HF operating is getting more popular all the time, and it doesn’t even need to be in a car anymore, as compact HF radios make it possible to have a complete backpack-sized station. You’ll see an example on our cover, which shows Jeff Francis, N0GQ, using his backpack-mounted station from up in the Rocky Mountains. From the mountains to the valleys, Robert Leo, W7LR, and some ham friends take us on a radio-active canoe trip on the Upper Missouri River. They used VHF and UHF to communicate between boats and portable HF gear to check in with home from “the middle of nowhere.” Contributing Editor Jeff Reinhardt, AA6JR, looks at the folks who hit the road to help fellow county-hunters contact the “rare ones.” Joe Moell, K0OV, brings us the results of last year’s CQ National Foxhunting Weekend – and the announcement of this year’s running of the foxes – on the weekend of May 11th and 12th; Contributing Editor Dave Ingram, K4TWJ, looks at “Mobiling 2002” in his “World of Ideas” column, while Radio Classics Editor Joe Veras, N4QB, looks back at mobiling in the 1950s, and Beginner’s Editor Pete O’Dell, WB2D, offers tips on “Your First Mobile Installation.” Finally, VHF-Plus Editor Joe Lynch, N6CL, shares a study he conducted to determine whether operating while driving may affect how much attention you’re paying to safe driving. Beyond the driver’s seat, we have the results of last year’s CQ World Wide RadioTeletype DX Contest, a look at the “Ham Radio Miracle” that brought CQ Antennas Editor Arnie Coro, CO2KK, to the United States on a visit from Cuba in late February and early March. “Washington Readout” Editor Fred Maia, W5YI, continues his look at preparations for next year’s World Radiocommunication Conference, with a special focus on the European proposal for separating hams and broadcasters on 40 meters. Both hams and shortwave listeners should find this proposal interesting reading. Power for our radios is a perennial favorite topic for articles, and the May CQ has two on the topic – “How It Works” Editor Dave Ingram, K4TWJ, looks at Easy Solar Power in his column, and “Math’s Notes” Editor Irwin Math, WA2NDM, focuses this month on battery accessories. Finally, DX Editor Carl Smith, N4AA, writes about operating procedures and operating ethics, especially during DXpeditions; Contesting Editor John Dorr, K1AR, looks at the new face of multioperator contesting; and Propagation Editor Tomas Hood, NW7US, takes us inside a CME – a Coronal Mass Ejection – and explains how these blasts from the sun affect propagation here on Earth. Again, this should be an article of interest to shortwave listeners as well as hams. A reminder: the first issue of the new quarterly CQ VHF magazine will be out in May. Previews of articles in that issue are on the CQ VHF website at <http://www.cq-vhf.com>.
