The main focus of the August issue of CQ, as always, is our report on the SSB results of last year's CQ World Wide DX Contest. In a related story featured on our cover, globetrotting correspondent Henryk Kotowski, SM0JHF, profiles two very different island "entities" that you're likely to hear on the air during contests -- the Dominican Republic (HI) and Finland's Åland Islands (OH0).

We've also got two follow-up articles on this year's Dayton Hamvention™ -- John Wood, WV5J, reports on an innovative "Helmet Cam" web TV camera linked to an internet connection so that anyone who couldn't make it to the show in person could at least get a glimpse of what was happening via the web; and CQ Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU, shares his discoveries of "new stuff" introduced at the show. You can get a hint from the article's title, "Dayton 2005: Year of the (Built-In) Computer."

"What's New" editor Karl Thurber, W8FX, follows with news about additional new products; "Math's Notes" editor Irwin Math, WA2NDM, continues his series on optical communications; and Public Service Editor Bob Josuweit, WA3PZO, highlights hams helping with a recreation of the famed Pony Express rides of the 1800s and reminds us that "It's All About the Message."

"Washington Readout" editor Fred Maia, W5YI, fills us in on a proposal in the UK to issue lifetime amateur licenses, along with a summary of the FCC presentations at Dayton. "World of Ideas" editor Dave Ingram, K4TWJ, shows us some ways to set up a portable station for those of us thinking about operating while on vacation this summer, and "Mobiling" editor Jeff Reinhardt, AA6JR, looks at the Hamvention from a mobiling perspective.

Next, Beginner's Editor Wayne Yoshida, KH6WZ, discusses the value to a new ham (or a not-so-new ham for that matter) of getting involved with a local radio club; Digital Editor Don Rotolo, N2IRZ, explores "Some Digital SSTV" (slow-scan TV), and QRP Editor K4TWJ brings us "The Hamfest Buddy," which he describes as a "QRP Treat."

"VHF-Plus" Editor Joe Lynch, N6CL, explodes some myths about the sun and the solar cycle and brings us bunches of reports from the bands as VHF/UHF DXing activity heats up along with the weather.

We go back to Dayton yet again with Contesting Editor John Dorr, K1AR, who shares a delightful speech from the contest banquet by ham author Ward Silver, N0AX; DX Editor Carl Smith, N4AA, talks about "Lids" and who decides on what basis whether someone is a poor operator; Awards Editor Ted Melinosky, K1BV, looks at some overseas awards, and Propagation Editor Tomas Hood, NW7S, predicts likely band conditions for the month of August.

That's a look at the highlights of the August, 2005 issue of CQ, which should be on newsstands and in readers' mailboxes by late July. For information on becoming a CQ subscriber, click the "Subscribe Here" button on our home page.
