The August issue of CQ starts out with a look from the other side of the DXpedition QSL circuit, as Ed Steeble, K3IXD, describes his experiences as "A First-Time DX QSL Manager" for W2GJ/C6A in the Bahamas. Next up are the SSB results of the 2006 CQ World Wide DX Contest. Once again, despite low sunspot numbers, the contest "made its own propagation" and a record number of logs was received. Here's a preview of the worldwide winners in each major category: High Power All Band - P40W; Low Power All Band - P40A (looks like Aruba was the place to be last fall!); QRP - TI5N; Assisted - FM/K9NW; Multi-Single - FY5KE; Multi-Two - 3V6T, and Multi-Multi - CT3YA.

We've also got our annual guide to new products introduced at Dayton in "Hot Stuff at Hamvention®" by CQ Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU. There was so much new stuff this year that we were forced to break the article into two parts - radios and amplifiers this month, antennas and accessories next month.

Our "Hot Stuff" feature leads off a string of Dayton-related articles, including W5YI's "Washington Readout" column, in which we report on the Dayton talk by the FCC's Bill Cross, W3TN, and present in full the remarks of FCC amateur enforcement chief Riley Hollingsworth, K4ZDH. Digital Editor Don Rotolo, N2IRZ, offers his "Reflections on Dayton," Mobiling Editor Jeff Reinhardt, AA6JR, has a photo feature on different mobile setups seen at Dayton, and VHF-Plus Editor Joe Lynch, N6CL, writes about a fuel-cell powered car he saw displayed in Dayton. Plus, DX Editor Carl Smith, N4AA, and Contesting Editor John Dorr, K1AR, both devote their columns this month to happenings at the Hamvention.

"Math's Notes" editor Irwin Math, WA2NDM, has ideas for "Basic Inexpensive Test Equipment" you can build; "World of Ideas" editor Dave Ingram, K4TWJ, follows our mobiling column with his own "Mobiling to the Max (Part 2)" on mobile setups and antennas, and Beginner's Editor Wayne Yoshida, KH6WZ, continues the mobiling theme by describing some detective work he did to track down a problem with one of his mobile antennas.

Public Service Editor Bob Josuweit, WA3PZO, asks, "Is Ham Radio Always the Answer?" Weekender Editor Phil Salas, AD5X, shows you how to add an Anderson Powerpole connector to a standard power supply, and QRP Editor Dave Ingram, K4TWJ, shares one of his recent discoveries - QRSS, or ultra-slow-speed CW (with an ultra-narrow bandwidth to boot) - and a new low-power transmitter kit from KI6DS of qrpkits.com.

"What's New" Editor Karl Thurber, W8FX -- in his final column before retiring from monthly writing after 27 years -- looks at microphones, meters and more. Awards Editor Ted Melinosky, K1BV, answers questions about the USA-CA Award program and provides info on a special award program to mark the upcoming 60th anniversary of QCWA, the Quarter Century Wireless Association. And Propagation Editor Tomas Hood, NW7US, continues his propagation basics series, looking this time at solar wind and coronal holes.

Our cover story this month is on the Student Space Program at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, and it is covered in detail by VHF-Plus Editor Joe Lynch, N6CL.

That's a brief look at what's coming up in the August issue of CQ magazine, which should be on newsstands and in subscribers' mailboxes by late July. For information on becoming a CQ subscriber, click the "Click Here to Subscribe" button at the top of this page.
